Finding the Right Home for Your Yorkie
If you are trying to find a new home for your Yorkie, the most important thing you can do is slow down. It is natural to want the situation resolved quickly, but a rushed placement is risky. The wrong home can mean your Yorkie ends up back in the system, neglected, or worse.
What a safe home for a Yorkie looks like:
- Screened adopters. The person taking your dog should be willing to go through a proper adoption process. Anyone who says "I'll take it now, no questions asked" is not a safe option.
- A realistic home environment. Small dogs need secure spaces. No gaps under gates, no open roads nearby. A Yorkie can slip through surprisingly small gaps.
- Someone who understands the breed. Yorkies are not low-maintenance dogs. They need grooming, attention, training, and vet care. The right home knows this going in.
Private rehoming through Gumtree, Facebook, or WhatsApp groups is never the safest route. It is impossible to properly screen someone through a Facebook message or a quick call. Rescues exist for this reason. They have the systems, the experience, and the follow-up to make sure your Yorkie ends up somewhere safe.
Handing your dog over to a rescue can feel like giving up control. In reality, you are giving your Yorkie a far better chance at a stable, lasting home than any private arrangement can offer.
